Extremity open MRI

Extremity open MRI is a high-field extremity MRI system specifically designed for detailed imaging of joints and soft tissues of the arms and legs. Its open design enhances patient comfort and helps reduce feelings of claustrophobia during the examination. The system enables precise visualization of ligaments, cartilage, tendons, and bone structures, supporting accurate diagnosis of musculoskeletal conditions. We are the only center in Canton Ticino offering Extremity open MRI at IRC Istituto Radiologico Collegiata.

When is a Open ONI MRI used?

ONI MRI is used for detailed evaluation of joint pain, sports injuries, ligament or tendon tears, cartilage damage, arthritis, and degenerative changes affecting the extremities. Its open design also makes it particularly suitable for patients with claustrophobia.

Preparation & Procedure

1. Medical review

Your doctor examines prior imaging and clinical history to confirm ONI MRI is the right approach for your symptoms. 

2. Arrival and preparation

Our team welcomes you and explains each step. Metal objects must be removed before scanning. 

3. Patient positioning

Only the affected limb is positioned inside the scanner, while the rest of the body remains outside for comfort. 

4. Image acquisition

High-resolution images are obtained using a 1.5-Tesla extremity-dedicated system designed for musculoskeletal detail. 

5. After the exam

The scan is painless, and you can resume normal activities immediately. Your doctor will discuss results and next steps.
