Photon-counting CT is an advanced form of computed tomography that uses a novel detector to count individual X-ray photons and measure their energy. This enables sharper images, improved tissue characterization, and high diagnostic confidence at low radiation dose. Photon-counting CT is used to improve diagnostic confidence across many body regions, including cardiovascular, lung, abdominal, musculoskeletal, and neurological imaging, especially when conventional CT reaches its limits. Compared with standard CT, it provides higher spatial resolution and enhanced tissue characterization, allowing earlier and more precise detection of subtle abnormalities. Above all, it allows for a significant reduction in contrast injections for the patient's well-being.
We review your history, implanted devices, allergies and kidney function to ensure the scan and any contrast use are safe.
You are positioned on the CT table. Depending on the exam, you may receive oral contrast or water to improve visualization.
For certain scans, iodine contrast may be injected carefully, especially if there are concerns like kidney impairment or allergies.
The scanner rotates around you while capturing detailed images. You need to lie still; the exam is painless and usually quick.
You can typically go home immediately. If contrast was used, we recommend drinking water unless your doctor advises otherwise.
